Comprehensive coverage
Non-collision damage can happen in a variety of ways.
Break-ins, a chipped windshield, falling trees—a lot more can happen to a vehicle than just a crash. Comprehensive coverage helps offset the costs from this kind of damage.
How does Comprehensive coverage help you?
Comprehensive covers loss or damage to your vehicle from:
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Fire, earthquake, explosion
  • Falling or flying objects such as a rock or gravel hitting your windshield
  • Hitting a domestic or wild animal
  • Weather—lightning, windstorm, hail, rising water
Windshield repairs now covered under Comprehensive
Windshield repairs can now be done for free under your Comprehensive coverage, without paying a deductible. The windshield damage must meet certain criteria, such as the size and location of the chip, and must be completed at one of ICBC's Glass Express facilities. Find out more about windshield repairs.

Comprehensive claims will not affect your current safe-driving discount level.
To find out more about how Comprehensive coverage could benefit you, talk to your Autoplan broker.

Why get it? Here are some examples
  • Somebody broke into Mandy’s car, stole her prized stereo system and damaged the door locks. She had Comprehensive coverage, and it looked after replacing the stereo and repairing the other damage the thief caused.

  • Don was driving home one evening when a deer ran into the road. He wasn’t able to stop before he hit it. Very scary, plus there was quite a bit of damage to his car. He was relieved to find that the repairs were covered by his Comprehensive insurance.
  • Jim’s windshield was chipped by a flying rock while he was driving. He didn't want the chip to grow and make his windshield unsafe. He was happy to learn that chip repair was covered by his ICBC Comprehensive coverage. And, he didn't have to pay a deductible.

Collision coverage
Cover repair and replacement costs, even if you’re at fault.
Even the best drivers can make mistakes, and fixing your vehicle can be expensive. Collision coverage helps pay for your vehicle repairs, towing, storage and more, even if the crash was your fault.
How does Collision coverage help you?
Collision coverage covers your repair costs when you hit another vehicle, object or the surface of the road.
Note: Some customers with a history of at-fault crashes can only buy Collision insurance with a high deductible, or may not qualify for this coverage.
To find out more about how Collision coverage could benefit you, talk to your Autoplan broker.

Why get it? Here's an example
Dave ran into another car at an intersection. The crash was his fault, but he had Collision coverage. That means the costs for his car’s repairs (minus the deductible) are covered. If he didn’t have collision coverage, he’d have to pay those repair costs—which could be thousands of dollars—himself.

Rental Vehicle Coverage
Valuable protection for you and your rented vehicle.
Rental Vehicle coverage gives you and your rented vehicle great protection at a very affordable rate. Many rental vehicle companies offer insurance to their customers, but it's often much more expensive than what we offer, and it may not cover as much.
How does Rental Vehicle Coverage help you?
Our product includes third party liability, accident benefits, underinsured motorist protection, collision, comprehensive and loss of use coverages.
We recommend that you contact your rental company before you travel to make sure they'll accept the Autoplan Rental Vehicle Policy. Most companies do, but some may ask for a larger deposit if you don't buy their coverage. They may also want proof of your Autoplan coverage.
Limits of coverage
There are some limits to the cost and type of vehicle our Rental Vehicle policy applies to. Check our Autoplan Insurance brochures or talk to your broker before you rent a vehicle.
Do you have a RoadStar or Roadside Plus package? Good news—you're already covered for rental vehicles.

Why get it? Here's an example
Val was driving a rental vehicle when she caused a crash. She’d bought our optional Rental Vehicle coverage, and was relieved to learn that it covered her liability for injuries and repair costs for the other vehicle, plus the collision damage to the rental vehicle. And she'd paid much less for the coverage than if she'd bought a similar product from a rental company.

Extended Third Party Liability coverage
If you're at fault in a crash, it could cost more than you think. Third Party Liability insurance protects you from the financial risk of an at-fault crash.
If you're found responsible for a crash, you could be liable for damages, lost income, care expenses and more – for both the other driver and their passengers.
Your Basic Autoplan includes up to $200,000 in Third Party Liability coverage. But the costs of a crash could be much higher – and you could be responsible for the difference.
It's simple: the lower your coverage, the higher your risk.
How does Extended Third Party Liability coverage help you?
Extending your Third Party Liability protects you from having to pay costs that go above your Basic Autoplan limit.
Extended Third Party Liability means:
  • you'll be protected against paying for injury and damage costs up to the limit of your coverage
  • the equity in your home or other assets won't be at risk
  • for a relatively small percentage of your overall premium, you get peace of mind
You can increase your coverage to a limit of $5 million.
Talk to your Autoplan broker today about increasing your Third Party Liability insurance.

Why get it? Here's an example
Helen only had Basic Autoplan coverage on her vehicle. She thought it was a good way to save some money. But when she caused a crash that hurt Amy, the driver of the other car, she learned the costs of a claim can add up. Amy was a young person with a well-paying job, and her injuries prevented her from continuing with her career.  The costs for her lost income and future care came to well over a million dollars.
The $200,000 liability limit on Helen's Basic Autoplan didn't meet those costs, and she was responsible for Amy's future expenses.
Stories like this are why most people choose to buy Extended Third Party Liability coverage: the peace of mind of knowing their personal assets won't be at risk due to one unfortunate event.

Extension Underinsured Motorist Protection

Getting into a collision is stressful enough. Finding out the other driver doesn't have enough coverage is even worse.
When it comes to auto insurance, it's a good idea to look out for yourself rather than rely on other drivers to have enough coverage. A serious crash could leave you with medical costs for the rest of your life. Extension Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) increases the protection provided under your Basic Autoplan, if the other driver doesn't have enough insurance.
Top up your Basic Autoplan with four coverage options
With Extension UMP, you can now get a total UMP limit of up to $2 million, $3 million, $4 million or $5 million (includes $1 million Basic UMP). You can also change, add or cancel your coverage at any time.

How does Extension Underinsured Motorist Protection help you?
If you're in a crash where the driver at fault doesn't have enough insurance, your total UMP limit will cover things like medical costs, rehabilitation and lost wages for:
  • you and all members of your household in the vehicle with Extension UMP coverage*
  • you and all members of your household who are injured as pedestrians or cyclists, or in a vehicle other than your own.

Get coverage for each vehicle in your household
*For complete protection, each vehicle in your household must have Extension UMP added to the vehicle coverage so that you and your loved ones will be covered in all the vehicle(s) that you own.
Note: Underinsured Motorist Protection coverage doesn't apply to crashes in provinces or states where the law doesn't allow you to sue and recover damages for injury or death caused by a vehicle crash.

Why get it? Here's an example
John is in sales and he's on the road a lot for his job. If he’s hurt in a crash, he doesn't know the other driver may not have enough insurance to cover the costs of his recovery.
That’s why he bought Extension Underinsured Motorist Protection. The added cost is a small price to pay for knowing that he and his family will be protected, even if the at-fault driver’s policy runs short.

Loss of Use coverage
Can you afford to be without your car? Loss of Use coverage will help you stay mobile if you can't use your vehicle after a claim.
Without your vehicle, you're going to need another way to get to work or school and keep on track with your busy life. Loss of Use coverage can help cover the extra costs.
How does Loss of Use coverage help you?
While your vehicle's being fixed, Loss of Use covers your expenses to rent a vehicle, use taxis and take public transit.
Loss of Use coverage applies from the time of your claim until
  • your vehicle is repaired
  • you're offered a total loss settlement, or
  • you reach the limit of your coverage—whichever happens first
To qualify for Loss of Use coverage, you need to also have Collision, Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage. You can also get Loss of Use coverage as part of the RoadStar or Roadside Plus packages, along with other popular coverages.
Limits of coverage
The amount paid for rental vehicles is limited to vehicles of a similar size to your own. We reimburse up to the daily limit purchased, however any amount in excess of this limit will have to be paid to the rental company.
Drivers under 21 may not be eligible to rent a vehicle at most rental companies, but Loss of Use will still cover expenses for taxis or transit.

Why get it? Here's an example
Gail had just dropped her son off at school when she had a crash. Her car needed a lot of repairs—it was going to take almost a week. That could have been a real inconvenience, but she'd chosen to buy Loss of Use coverage. It paid her costs to rent a substitute vehicle. She was able to pick up her son after school, and had none of the hassle of trying to get around for days without a car.

Specified Perils
Like comprehensive coverage but at a lower price. With Specified Perils you only pay for the coverage you need.
Protect your vehicle against risks from weather, theft, fire and more. Specified Perils coverage is similar to Comprehensive coverage, but has a shorter list of damages it covers. It also costs less than Comprehensive.
How does Specified Perils coverage help you?
Specified Perils protects you from loss or damage to your vehicle from:
  • Theft
  • Fire, earthquake or explosion
  • Weather—lightning, windstorm, hail, rising water
Specified Perils doesn't cover things like vandalism, windshield damage or hitting an animal.
Why get it? Here are some examples
  • Dave’s car was stolen. He was shocked, because it was old and nothing fancy. He’d chosen to buy Specified Perils coverage anyway, and now he was glad he did. It covered a rental vehicle so he could still drive to work and take his kids to their activities. And when his car was found over a week later with lots of damage, his coverage looked after the repairs.
  • Renee got caught in a severe hailstorm. She couldn’t believe how much damage it did to her car. Luckily her Specified Perils coverage looked after getting her car repaired and repainted.

New Vehicle Protection
You love your new car, but can you afford to replace it because of a crash?
After a home, your new car is usually the second-largest purchase you'll make. You can protect your investment with coverage that will repair or replace it in the event of a crash.
New Vehicle Replacement Plus (NVR+)
New Vehicle Replacement Plus is all about giving you choice and peace of mind, even if you were at fault for the crash.
After a crash
If your vehicle can be repaired, we'll fix it with unlimited new parts from the original manufacturer, if available.
If your vehicle is written-off...
  • You'll have the choice of:
    • replacing it with a new model,
    • replacing it with a different vehicle of equal value, or
    • taking a cash payout.
  • We'll protect you from depreciation and inflation, so your settlement will cover the full cost of a new vehicle.
  • We'll also reimburse your deductible.

When does a vehicle get written-off?
Normally a vehicle is written-off when it would cost more to repair than what the vehicle is worth.
NVR+ protection lowers the threshold. With this coverage, your vehicle is written-off when the cost to repair exceeds just half of its market value.

Eligibility
Most drivers who have a 20 per cent or better claim-rated scale discount are eligible for NVR+ protection.
You can get NVR+ protection for any car or truck that weighs less than 5,500kg when fully loaded, as long as the model is from within the last two years.
To confirm your eligibility and get a quote for NVR+ protection or one of our related coverages, talk to your broker.
Not eligible?
If you're not eligible for NVR+ coverage, your broker can get you set up with an alternative form of coverage. Your broker may recommend Replacement Cost coverage, or Limited Depreciation Endorsement, which offer similar benefits.

Limited Depreciation Endorsement
Limited Depreciation Endorsement coverage is open to many people who may not be eligible for NVR+.
If your vehicle is written off, it provides you with either:
  • a new vehicle of the same model year (if available), or
  • a payout of the original purchase price (or manufacturer's suggested retail price at the time of purchase - whichever is less).

If your vehicle can be fixed, repairs will use new parts of similar kind and quality.
Why get it? Here are some examples
  • Nate was thrilled with his new car, and he made sure he had New Vehicle Replacement Plus coverage — just in case something happened to it. Sure enough, it was in a bad crash less than a year after he bought it. The repair costs would have been just over 50% of what Nate had paid for the new car. But because he purchased NVR+ coverage, his car was written off and he got the full replacement value.
  • When Julie bought her new car, she chose Replacement Cost coverage for extra protection. Her car was in a crash, and she was happy to find out her coverage meant the car's repairs were done with brand-new parts from the original manufacturer.

Buy or renew your insurance
ICBC's Autoplan insurance is sold exclusively through our province-wide network of 900 Autoplan brokers. These brokers are licensed professionals who can help you choose the right insurance protection for you, your family and your vehicle.
Auto insurance isn't always easy to understand. Your broker is there to help you compare and customize Autoplan coverage to fit your individual needs—the products you choose, the length of your policy, your payment options and more.
Choosing a policy length
Autoplan policies can last from one day to one year, so you have lots of options to meet your needs.
One-year Autoplan policyThis is the option most customers choose, and many use our monthly payment plan to spread the cost over a year.
Short-term Autoplan policy
- 3 to 11 months

When your vehicle won't be on the road for a full year, a short-term policy might be your best choice. You'll pay a small surcharge, but the total cost will be less than a full-year policy.
Temporary Operation Permit
- 1 to 15 days
This is a good option if you only need a few days of coverage. If you're going to need several TOPs, you may save yourself money by buying a three-month policy. Talk to your broker about the best options for you.
Renewing early
You can renew your insurance early, up to 55 days before your Autoplan policy expires.
Keep your insurance up to date
Be sure the information on your Autoplan policy is correct and current. If it isn't, you may not be covered if you have a claim.
Talk to your local broker if you're:
  • Moving (even within the same community) or temporarily relocating
  • Changing the way you use your vehicle (for example, you start driving to work or school)
  • Driving a different vehicle
  • Modifying your vehicle (for example, changing its colour, chassis, fuel type)
Other factors can also affect your insurance, so please ask your broker if you have any other changes.
Tickets, fines and penalties
Please note that before you renew, you'll need to pay any outstanding amount that you owe to ICBC or the provincial government, including traffic tickets, penalty point premiums and any Autoplan debt.
